Porting Checklist: Grasshopper

How to port a phone number from Grasshopper VoIP to Phound, including the Primary PIN, LOA, and cancellation by phone requirement.

Porting Checklist: Grasshopper

Grasshopper is a VoIP business line provider. Porting out requires generating a Primary PIN inside the Grasshopper app, downloading a recent invoice, and signing a Letter of Authorization (LOA). Grasshopper does not charge a port-out fee, but you can only cancel service by phone — not by email or web — so plan to call after the port completes.

Porting is supported for U.S. and Canadian local and toll-free numbers. International numbers cannot be ported out.

What You Need from Grasshopper

  • Your Grasshopper account number (usually the primary phone number on the account, 10 digits)
  • A Primary PIN (4-digit, set inside the Grasshopper app)
  • The billing address on file
  • A recent Grasshopper invoice (PDF or screenshot)
  • A signed LOA (template provided by Phound)

Step 1: Set or Reset Your Primary PIN

The Primary PIN is a 4-digit code you create inside the Grasshopper app. Regenerate it close to the port submission date — it can expire.

  1. Open the Grasshopper app.
  2. Tap the Menu icon.
  3. Go to Settings → Account information → Account info.
  4. Tap Primary PIN.
  5. Enter a new 4-digit code.
  6. Save.

Step 2: Find Your Account Number

Same path in the Grasshopper app:

Menu → Settings → Account information → Account info

The account number is usually the primary phone number on the account (10 digits).

Step 3: Download a Recent Invoice

The gaining carrier will request proof of billing.

  1. Sign in at grasshopper.com.
  2. Go to Billing → Invoices.
  3. Download your most recent invoice (within the last 30 days).

Step 4: Verify Account is Active and In Good Standing

  • Account must be active and paid up
  • Any past-due balance can block porting
  • Do not cancel Grasshopper before the port completes — Grasshopper does not support releasing a number ahead of port completion, so premature cancellation breaks the port

Tip: Consider calling Grasshopper support at 1-800-820-8210 to confirm your number is portable (especially for toll-free numbers) before submitting.

Step 5: Complete the LOA

Phound provides an LOA template. It must include:

  • Authorized user's full legal name — matching Grasshopper's records
  • Account number (the primary phone number)
  • Billing address on file with Grasshopper
  • Phone numbers being ported
  • Date and signature

Mismatches on name or address are the top rejection reason.

Step 6: Submit Your Port Request in Phound

  1. Open PhoundSettings > Numbers > Port a Number.
  2. Provide:
    • Grasshopper account number
    • Primary PIN
    • Signed LOA
    • Recent invoice
    • Phone number(s)
  3. Submit.

Track in Check Your Porting Status.

Step 7: Cancel Grasshopper by Phone (After Port Completes)

Grasshopper does not support cancellation by email or online. After the port to Phound completes:

  1. Call 1-800-820-8210 (available 24/7).
  2. Ask to cancel your Grasshopper account.
  3. Confirm the cancellation date so you're not billed further.

Warning: If you're on an annual prepaid plan, Grasshopper typically does not refund unused prepaid time. Time your cancellation around your renewal date if you want to minimize loss.

Timeline

  • Typical: 10–15 business days
  • Toll-free numbers: Can be longer
  • Bulk transfers: Can extend further

Grasshopper numbers are wireline/VoIP — expect the longer wireline port timeline, not the same-day wireless port speed.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Expired Primary PIN — regenerate and resubmit promptly
  • Name or address mismatch with Grasshopper records
  • Account past due
  • Trying to port an international number (not supported)
  • Invoice too old (over 30 days)
