TCR & 10DLC Explained: How to Get Approved for Business SMS

Understand TCR and 10DLC registration for business texting, why carriers require it, and how to get approved the first time for Phound Business and Phound Wave.

TCR & 10DLC Explained: How to Get Approved for Business SMS

Before you can send business text messages through Phound Business or Phound Wave, you need to complete TCR and 10DLC registration. If those terms sound confusing, don't worry, the idea behind them is actually simple.

This guide explains what TCR and 10DLC are, why mobile carriers require this registration, how Brand and Campaign registration work, the most common reasons businesses get rejected, and how to dramatically improve your chances of getting approved the first time.

Tip: This registration applies to both Phound products that send business SMS, Phound Business and Phound Wave. Once you understand the concepts here, the Carrier Registration in Phound Wave guide walks through the actual submission steps and Message Packs.

What Are TCR and 10DLC?

These are two acronyms you'll see throughout the registration process:

  • TCR stands for The Campaign Registry. It's the centralized system US wireless carriers use to verify legitimate business SMS senders.
  • 10DLC stands for 10-Digit Long Code, which is simply the type of standard local phone number businesses use to send text messages (as opposed to a short code or toll-free number).

At its core, the process answers three questions that mobile carriers want to know before they let your messages through:

  1. Who is sending the messages?
  2. What kind of messages are being sent?
  3. Did the people receiving them actually give permission?

That's really what this entire process comes down to. TCR isn't just a Phound requirement, it's part of the industry-wide carrier approval process that reduces spam and verifies real businesses before they start sending. So if you plan to use Phound Business or Phound Wave for customer support, appointment reminders, account notifications, marketing campaigns, automated SMS, or general customer communication, this registration is something you'll need to complete.

Brand vs. Campaign Registration

At a high level, registration has two parts: your Brand and your Campaign. The easiest way to remember the difference:

  • Your Brand is who you are.
  • Your Campaign is what you're sending.

Brand: Who You Are

The Brand section is where you provide information about your business, including:

  • Your legal business name
  • Company type
  • EIN (tax ID), if applicable
  • Website
  • Industry
  • Contact information

Campaign: What You're Sending

The Campaign section is where you explain how you plan to use messaging, for example customer care messages, appointment reminders, account notifications, or marketing messages.

This is where a lot of businesses run into trouble, not because the process is difficult, but because the information they provide isn't specific enough.

The Opt-In Process Is the Biggest Factor

One of the biggest approval factors is your opt-in process, in other words, how someone gave your business permission to text them. Carriers want to see that you're only messaging people who actually agreed to hear from you.

That's why you'll typically be asked to provide:

  • Your call-to-action process
  • Screenshots of your opt-in flow
  • Sample messages
  • Privacy Policy
  • Terms of Service

Tip: Keep your sample messages realistic and specific, and make sure they match the use case you selected. Vague or mismatched samples are one of the most common reasons submissions get held up.

Why Your Website, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Service Matter

A question we get a lot is whether you need a website. Technically every situation is different, but having a live website is one of the strongest things you can provide during registration. A website:

  • Helps verify that your business is real
  • Gives reviewers context about what you do
  • Provides a home for your Privacy Policy, Terms of Service, and SMS consent language

The stronger and more complete your online presence is, the smoother the approval process usually becomes.

Use AI to Prepare Your Submission

Here's a tip that saves a lot of time: don't write everything from scratch. This is a perfect use case for AI. You can use Claude, ChatGPT, or whichever AI assistant you prefer, to help you draft:

  • Your campaign description
  • Your opt-in language
  • Your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service language
  • Sample messages

Tell the AI about your business and the kind of messages you'll be sending, and let it help you draft the content.

Warning: Always review everything before you submit it. AI can help you draft, but the submission still needs to accurately reflect your real business and how your customers actually interact with you.

Common Reasons Businesses Get Rejected

If you don't get approved immediately, don't panic, it's actually pretty common, and most issues are easy to fix. Most delays come from:

  • Unclear opt-in language
  • A missing Privacy Policy or Terms of Service
  • Weak campaign descriptions
  • Sample messages that don't match your stated use case

These are all fixable. A rejection is usually a request for clarification, not a dead end.

How Phound Helps

Unlike many SMS providers, you're not left guessing after you submit. Phound doesn't fill out the registration for you, because only you know your business, but after you submit, a Phound representative reviews it, gives you feedback, and explains exactly what needs to be updated before approval.

In other words, Phound reviews your submission, helps identify common issues, and works with you to improve your chances of getting approved, so you're not doing this alone.

Final Checklist

If you're preparing for TCR registration, focus on these before you submit:

  • Your business information is accurate
  • Your website is live
  • Your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service are published
  • Your SMS consent and opt-in language is clear
  • Your sample messages match the messages you actually plan to send

If those pieces are in place, you're in a much stronger position to get approved. At the end of the day, TCR registration isn't really about filling out forms, it's about proving you're a legitimate business communicating with people who asked to hear from you.
