App Crashes or Performance Problems

Fix app crashes, freezes, and performance issues with Phound.

App Crashes or Performance Problems

When Phound crashes unexpectedly, freezes during use, or runs noticeably slower than usual, it can disrupt your communication and leave you unable to access your calls, messages, and personas. This guide covers the most common causes and provides step-by-step instructions to get the app running smoothly again.

Understanding the Problem

Before you start, identify what you are experiencing:

  • Crash: The app closes suddenly and returns you to your home screen.
  • Freeze: The app stops responding to taps. The screen appears stuck and buttons do not react.
  • Slow performance: The app works but feels sluggish — screens load slowly, scrolling is choppy, and switching between personas has noticeable delay.

The steps below address all three. Work through them in order and test after each step.

Tip: If the app crashes immediately upon opening (a "crash loop"), skip ahead to Step 5 (Clear Cache) or Step 7 (Reinstall), since you may not be able to interact with the app long enough to try earlier steps.

Step 1: Force Close and Reopen the App

Completely closing the app clears its current state from memory and gives it a fresh start.

On iOS: Open the app switcher (swipe up from the bottom) and swipe Phound up to close it. On Android: Open recent apps and swipe Phound away, or go to Settings > Apps > Phound > Force Stop.

Wait five seconds, then reopen. This resolves the majority of one-time crashes and temporary freezes.

Step 2: Restart Your Device

A full restart clears all running processes, frees up memory, and resets temporary system states.

  1. Power off your device completely.
  2. Wait at least 15 seconds before turning it back on.
  3. Open Phound and test whether the issue is resolved.

Tip: If you cannot remember the last time you restarted your phone, that alone may be contributing to performance issues. A weekly restart is a good habit.

Step 3: Update the Phound App

Outdated versions can have known bugs that have already been fixed. Keeping the app current is one of the best ways to prevent crashes.

On iOS: Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and check for available updates. On Android: Open the Google Play Store, go to Manage apps & device, and look for Phound under available updates.

Warning: If automatic updates are turned off, you may be several versions behind. Enable automatic updates for Phound to stay current.

Step 4: Check Available Storage Space

Low storage causes unpredictable behavior across all apps. The operating system cannot allocate the temporary space apps need to run.

On iOS: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. On Android: Go to Settings > Storage. If available space is less than 1 GB, free up space by removing unused apps, photos, or files.

Tip: Phound itself uses modest storage, but it needs working space for caching messages and call data. A full device disk affects all apps, including Phound.

Step 5: Clear Cache and App Data

Cached data can accumulate and occasionally become corrupted, leading to crashes.

On Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Phound > Storage & Cache and tap Clear Cache. If that does not help, tap Clear Data to reset the app (you will need to log in again).

On iOS: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Phound and tap Offload App, then Reinstall App to get a fresh copy.

Warning: Clearing data or offloading will log you out. Make sure you know your credentials. Your messages, call history, and personas are stored in the cloud and sync back when you log in.

Step 6: Check Operating System Compatibility

Phound requires a minimum OS version to function properly:

  • iOS: Version 15.0 or later
  • Android: Version 10 (API level 29) or later

Check your version at Settings > General > About (iOS) or Settings > About Phone (Android). If your OS is below the minimum, update it. If your device cannot be updated, Phound may not run reliably on that hardware.

Tip: Even if your OS meets the minimum, updating to the latest version is recommended for performance improvements and security patches that benefit all apps.

Step 7: Reinstall the App

A complete reinstall replaces all app files with a fresh copy from the app store.

  1. Delete Phound from your device.
  2. Restart your device.
  3. Download and install Phound from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  4. Log in with your account credentials and grant all requested permissions.
  5. Allow a few minutes for data to sync, then test by making a call or sending a message.

Tip: Reinstalling does not delete your account, phone numbers, personas, or message history. Everything syncs back from the cloud when you log in.

Step 8: Check for Conflicting Apps

Battery optimization apps, memory cleaners, and aggressive task managers can interfere with Phound by closing its background processes.

  1. If you use a battery saver or task manager, add Phound to its exclusion list.
  2. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Phound > Battery and set optimization to Unrestricted.
  3. On Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and OnePlus devices, search your settings for "sleeping apps" or "app power management" and exclude Phound.

Step 9: Report the Bug

If the issue persists after all steps, it may be a bug that needs a fix from our development team.

  1. In the Phound app, go to Settings > Help & Support > Report a Bug.
  2. Describe the issue in detail: what you were doing, how often it occurs, and whether it started after a specific event.
  3. If the app crashes before you can access the report screen, email support@phound.app directly.

The app may prompt you to send a crash report after a crash. Accepting sends anonymized diagnostic data that is extremely helpful for our engineers.
