Can't Receive Calls? Troubleshooting Guide

Missing incoming calls on your Phound number can be frustrating, especially when you rely on that number for work or personal communication. The good news is that most call-receiving issues have straightforward fixes. This guide walks you through a systematic set of checks so you can get back to receiving calls as quickly as possible.

Before You Start

Before diving into the steps below, confirm the basics:

  • Make sure you are running the latest version of Phound. Check for updates in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
  • Have a second phone available so you can place test calls to your Phound number as you work through each step.

Tip: After completing each step below, place a test call to your Phound number before moving on. This helps you identify exactly which fix resolved the issue.

Step 1: Check Your Internet Connection

Phound uses your data connection — Wi-Fi or cellular data — to route calls. If your connection is weak, unstable, or offline, incoming calls will not reach your device.

  1. Open a web browser and try loading any website. If it does not load, your internet connection is the issue.
  2. Try switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data to see if calls come through on one but not the other.
  3. Toggle Airplane Mode on for ten seconds, then turn it off to force a network reconnection.
  4. Make sure mobile data is enabled for the Phound app. Some devices restrict individual apps from using cellular data.

For a deeper dive into network problems, see our full guide on Connection and Network Issues.

Warning: Calls require a stable connection with reasonable bandwidth. If you are on a very slow or congested network, calls may fail to connect. Move to a stronger connection if possible.

Step 2: Check Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes

One of the most commonly overlooked causes of missed calls is your device's Do Not Disturb (DND) or Focus mode, which can silently block notifications from Phound.

On iOS: Open Settings > Focus and check whether any Focus mode is currently active. Either turn it off or add Phound to the allowed apps list. Also verify notifications are enabled under Settings > Notifications > Phound.

On Android: Pull down the notification shade and look for the DND icon. If active, turn it off or add Phound as an exception under Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb > Exceptions.

Tip: Check for scheduled DND that activates automatically during certain hours, such as sleeping hours. This can block calls during times you need to be reachable.

Step 3: Verify Notification Permissions

Even with DND off, Phound needs explicit permission to show notifications. Without this, the app cannot alert you to incoming calls.

On iOS: Go to Settings > Notifications > Phound. Enable Allow Notifications, Sounds, and Banners.

On Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Phound > Notifications. Enable the main toggle and make sure the Incoming Calls channel is set to High or Urgent importance.

Step 4: Make Sure Your Number Is Active

If your Phound number has been deactivated or suspended, incoming calls will not route to it. Common reasons include:

  • Your subscription has expired or payment has failed.
  • The number was released due to extended inactivity on the Free tier (see our number retention policy).
  • Your account is under review for a policy violation.

Open the Phound app and check the Home screen. Active numbers display a green status indicator. If a number shows yellow or red, tap it for details. Go to Settings > Subscription to confirm your plan and payment method are current.

Warning: If a number has been fully released and the 30-day grace period has passed, it may no longer be available for reactivation. You will need to select a new number.

Step 5: Check Your Persona Settings

Each Phound number is tied to a persona, and persona settings can affect how calls are handled.

  1. Navigate to the Personas tab and select the persona in question.
  2. Check call forwarding — if enabled and pointed to an unreachable number, calls will not ring on your device.
  3. Check the availability schedule — if the current time is outside your set hours, calls may route straight to voicemail.
  4. Review Persona Settings > Blocked Contacts to ensure you have not accidentally blocked callers.
  5. Confirm the persona is set to Active. A paused persona will not accept incoming calls.

Step 6: Check Voicemail and Forwarding Settings

If calls go directly to voicemail without ringing, the issue may be a configuration problem rather than a general inability to receive calls.

  1. Call your Phound number from another phone. If it goes to voicemail immediately, calls are arriving but being redirected.
  2. Check Voicemail Settings for the persona and make sure the ring duration is set to at least 20 seconds.
  3. Disable call forwarding temporarily to test whether calls ring through to the app.
  4. Check your Call History — if calls appear as missed, they are reaching Phound but your device is not alerting you (revisit Step 3).

Step 7: Force Close and Reopen the App

The app can sometimes lose its connection to Phound's servers while running in the background. Force closing and reopening re-establishes the connection.

On iOS: Open the app switcher and swipe Phound up to close it. On Android: Open recent apps and swipe Phound away, or go to Settings > Apps > Phound > Force Stop. Wait five seconds, then reopen.

Step 8: Reinstall the App

If nothing else has worked, a clean reinstall can fix issues caused by corrupted data or incomplete updates.

  1. Delete the Phound app from your device.
  2. Restart your device.
  3. Download and install Phound from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  4. Log in with your existing credentials. Your numbers, personas, and message history will be restored automatically.
  5. Re-enable notification permissions when prompted.

Tip: Reinstalling does not affect your account, numbers, or stored data. Everything is synced to your Phound account in the cloud.

Quick Reference Checklist
