What Are Personas?
If you have ever wished you could hand out a different phone number to different people in your life, Phound's persona system was built for you. A persona is a self-contained communication identity that lives inside the Phound app. Each persona has its own name, phone number, voicemail greeting, ringtone, and conversation history, letting you keep every sphere of your life neatly separated without carrying multiple devices.
The Core Idea
Think of a persona the way you might think of wearing different hats throughout your day. When you are at the office, you present yourself one way. When you are hanging out with friends, you are a bit more relaxed. When you are selling items online or managing a side project, you might use a completely different name or greeting. Phound takes that natural behavior and gives it structure by letting you create distinct digital identities, each with its own dedicated phone number, voicemail greeting, and contacts.
Phound offers four persona types to cover the key areas of your life:
- Professional — For work, clients, and business contacts.
- Personal — For friends, family, and everyday life.
- Promotional — For marketing, online selling, and outreach.
- Public — For public-facing communication where you want to keep your other numbers private.
Every persona you create is fully independent. Calls and texts that arrive on one persona's number stay within that persona's inbox. Contacts you save to one persona do not bleed into another. Notifications can be styled differently so you know at a glance which part of your life needs attention. The result is a cleaner, calmer phone experience where nothing gets tangled together.
What Makes Up a Persona
A persona is more than just a label. Here is what each one includes:
- Display name — The name contacts see when you call or text them from that persona. This could be your real name, a business name, or anything you choose.
- Phone number — A dedicated number assigned to the persona. You can pick a local or toll-free number during setup. For details on choosing the right number, see Choosing a Phone Number.
- Avatar or icon — A visual identifier that appears in the Phound app so you can quickly distinguish your personas at a glance.
- Voicemail greeting — A custom recording or text-to-speech message that plays when calls to that persona go unanswered.
- Ringtone and notification sound — Unique audio cues that let you know which persona is receiving attention, even when your phone is in your pocket.
- Contacts — Each persona maintains its own separate contact list, so your Professional contacts never mix with your Personal ones.
Tip: Give each persona a visually distinct avatar and a unique ringtone. This small step makes it far easier to tell your personas apart during a busy day. See Customizing Notifications for guidance on notification sounds.
Common Use Cases
Personas are flexible enough to fit almost any scenario. Here are some of the most popular ways Phound users put them to work:
Professional and Personal Separation
The most common setup is a two-persona arrangement: a Professional persona for work and a Personal persona for everyday life. Your Professional persona can have business hours, a professional voicemail greeting, and a separate contact list, while your Personal persona stays relaxed and private. Learn how to set this up in Using Personas for Work vs. Personal.
Freelance and Side Projects
Freelancers and independent contractors often juggle multiple clients or gigs. A dedicated persona for each project means clients always reach the right "version" of you, and you can track which project is generating calls at any time. Check out Personas for Freelance and Side Projects for detailed strategies.
Online Selling and Marketplaces
Listing items on marketplaces means sharing a phone number with strangers. A Promotional persona dedicated to buying and selling keeps those conversations away from your Personal inbox and gives you the option to retire the number once you are done.
Public-Facing Communication
A Public persona lets you share a real, working phone number for dating apps, social media profiles, or community involvement without exposing your primary line. If things do not work out, you can simply deactivate that persona's number rather than changing your main one.
Team Roles and Shared Lines
Small businesses and teams can assign a persona to a role instead of a person. A "Support" persona or a "Sales" persona routes calls to whoever is on duty without tying the number to a single employee. Explore this further in Personas for Team Roles and Shared Lines.
How Personas Relate to Numbers
Every persona needs at least one phone number to function. When you create a new persona, Phound walks you through picking or assigning a number. Here are the key rules to keep in mind:
- One number, one persona. Each phone number belongs to exactly one persona at a time. This is what keeps conversations from overlapping.
- You can reassign numbers. If you retire a persona, its number can be moved to a different persona rather than released entirely. See Assign Numbers to Personas for step-by-step instructions.
- Multiple numbers on one persona. A single persona can hold more than one number if your plan supports it. This is useful if you want a local number and a toll-free number both routing to the same identity.
Warning: Releasing a phone number is permanent. Once released, the number returns to the carrier pool and may be reassigned to someone else. Always reassign a number to another persona instead of releasing it if you think you might want it back. Review Managing Your Phone Numbers before making changes.
Privacy and Separation
One of the biggest benefits of the persona system is privacy. Because each persona operates independently, there is no way for someone who only has your Professional persona number to discover your Personal persona number through Phound. Your personas do not share contact lists, call logs, or message threads unless you explicitly choose to merge or move data.
This separation also extends to notifications. You can mute a persona entirely during off-hours, set Do Not Disturb schedules per persona, or configure auto-responses so that callers know when to expect a reply. For more on scheduling, see Setting Business Hours.

Tip: If you are brand new to Phound, start with just two personas — a Professional persona for work and a Personal persona for everyday use. You can always add Promotional or Public personas later as you discover new use cases. Keeping it simple at first helps you build the habit of switching between personas before adding complexity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many personas can I have? The number of personas you can create depends on your Phound plan. Free accounts include one persona, while paid plans support multiple personas. Check Plans and Pricing for current limits.
Can I delete a persona? Yes. Deleting a persona archives its call and message history and releases or reassigns its number. You can access archived data from your account settings for 90 days after deletion.
Do my contacts know I am using Phound? No. Calls and texts from your persona appear to come from a standard phone number. There is no Phound branding visible to the people you communicate with.
