How Phound Protects Your Privacy
Privacy is not a feature we bolted on as an afterthought — it is the foundation Phound is built on. When you use a second phone number to separate parts of your life, you are trusting us with sensitive communication data, and we take that responsibility seriously.
This guide explains exactly how Phound protects your information, what data we collect (and what we do not), and the controls you have over your own data. By the end, you will understand the technical and policy measures that keep your privacy intact every time you make a call, send a text, or manage a persona.
Our Privacy Philosophy
Phound operates on a simple principle: collect only what is necessary, protect everything we store, and never sell your data to anyone.
We believe that a communication app should work for you, not mine your conversations for advertising revenue. Unlike platforms that monetize user data, Phound's business model is built entirely on subscriptions. You pay for the service, and in return, we keep your data private. There is no hidden trade-off.
Tip: You can review our full privacy policy at any time by going to Settings > Privacy Policy within the app or visiting our website. It is written in plain language, not legalese.
Data Encryption
Phound uses industry-standard encryption to protect your data both in transit and at rest.
Encryption in Transit
Every piece of data that moves between your device and our servers is encrypted using TLS 1.3 (Transport Layer Security). This means that when you place a call, send a message, or sync your account, the data traveling over the internet is scrambled and unreadable to anyone who might intercept it. This applies whether you are on Wi-Fi, cellular data, or a public network.
Encryption at Rest
Data stored on our servers — including your account information, message history, and voicemail recordings — is encrypted using AES-256 encryption. This is the same standard used by banks and government agencies. Even in the unlikely event of a server breach, your data would be unreadable without the encryption keys, which are stored separately and managed with strict access controls.
Warning: While Phound encrypts your data on our end, the security of your device matters too. Always use a strong passcode or biometric lock on your phone, and keep your operating system up to date to protect against local vulnerabilities.
What Data We Collect
Transparency matters. Here is a clear breakdown of the data Phound collects and why:
Data We Store
| Data Type | Why We Collect It |
|---|---|
| Email address | Account creation, login, and account recovery |
| Primary phone number | Account verification and identity confirmation |
| Phound phone numbers | To provision and route calls and messages to your account |
| Call and message logs | To display your communication history within the app |
| Voicemail recordings | To store and play back voicemails you receive |
| Persona details | Names, avatars, and settings you create for each persona |
| Billing information | To process your subscription payments securely |
Data We Do NOT Collect
- Contents of your calls — Phound does not record or store the audio of your phone calls. Call content is transmitted in real time and not retained.
- Location data — We do not track your GPS location or log where you are when you use the app.
- Contact lists — Phound does not upload or access your device's contact book unless you explicitly grant permission for caller ID matching, and even then, contacts are processed locally on your device.
- Browsing history or app usage from other apps — We have no visibility into what you do outside of Phound.
Tip: Wondering what data Phound has stored for your account? You can request a full data export at any time from Settings > Privacy > Download My Data.
We Never Sell Your Data
This point is worth repeating on its own: Phound does not sell, rent, license, or share your personal data with third-party advertisers, data brokers, or marketing companies. Period.
Your data is used exclusively to provide and improve the Phound service. We do not build advertising profiles. We do not track you across the web. We do not monetize your communication patterns.
The only circumstances under which we would share data with a third party are:
- With your explicit consent — for example, if you choose to integrate with another service.
- To comply with lawful legal requests — such as a valid court order or subpoena, in which case we will notify you unless legally prohibited from doing so.
- With service providers — such as our payment processor, who only receives the billing data necessary to charge your subscription.
GDPR and International Privacy Standards
Phound is designed with global privacy standards in mind. Even if you are not located in the European Union, you benefit from the same protections that GDPR and similar regulations require.
Here is what that means for you in practice:
- Right to access — You can request a copy of all personal data we hold about you.
- Right to correction — If any of your data is inaccurate, you can update it or ask us to correct it.
- Right to deletion — You can request that we delete your account and all associated data (see the account deletion section below).
- Right to portability — You can export your data in a standard format.
- Right to object — You can opt out of any optional data processing at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, visit Settings > Privacy within the app or contact our support team.
User Control Over Your Data
Phound gives you direct control over your data through several in-app tools:
Notification and Communication Preferences
You decide what emails and notifications you receive from Phound. Head to Settings > Notifications to customize alerts for each persona, and Settings > Communications to manage marketing emails. You can opt out of all non-essential communications at any time.
Message and Call History Management
You can delete individual messages, entire conversation threads, or call log entries at any time. Deleted items are removed from our servers within 30 days. For voicemails, deleting a recording removes it from our storage permanently.
Data Export
Want a copy of everything Phound has on file for you? Go to Settings > Privacy > Download My Data to generate a full export. This includes your account information, call and message logs, persona details, and billing history. The export is delivered as a downloadable file in a standard format.
Account Deletion
If you decide Phound is no longer for you, you can delete your account entirely. This process removes all your data from our servers, including your account profile, communication history, voicemail recordings, and billing records.
To delete your account:
- Open the Phound app and go to Settings > Account > Delete Account.
- Confirm your identity by entering your password or using biometric authentication.
- Review the summary of what will be deleted.
- Tap Permanently Delete My Account.
Warning: Account deletion is irreversible. Once your account is deleted, all data is permanently removed and cannot be recovered. Any active phone numbers on your account will be released back to carrier inventory. If you have a number you might want to keep, consider porting it out before deleting your account.
Verified ID
Phound offers Verified ID, a feature that lets you verify your identity to build trust with the people you communicate with. When your identity is verified, your persona displays a verification badge that recipients can see, signaling that you are a real, authenticated user. This is especially valuable for business communication, freelancers, and anyone who wants to establish credibility when using a second phone number.
Verified ID is an opt-in feature — your privacy is preserved by default, and you choose when and where to display your verification status.
Best Practices for Protecting Your Privacy
While Phound handles the heavy lifting on the server side, here are a few things you can do to maximize your privacy:
- Use a strong, unique password for your Phound account. Do not reuse passwords from other services.
- Enable two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of protection to your account.
- Consider Verified ID — If you use Phound for business, verifying your identity helps establish trust with contacts while still keeping your real phone number private.
- Keep your app updated — we regularly release updates that include security patches and improvements.
- Lock your phone with a passcode, fingerprint, or face recognition to prevent unauthorized access to the app.
