Number Features and Capabilities

Explore the full range of features available for each Phound phone number.

Number Features and Capabilities

Every phone number on your Phound account comes with a full suite of features designed to give you control over how you communicate. From calling and texting to business hours scheduling and per-number Do Not Disturb, each number works as a fully featured phone line.

This guide covers the features available for your Phound numbers and how to set each one up.

SMS and MMS Messaging

Every Phound number supports both SMS (text messages) and MMS (multimedia messages).

  • SMS — Standard text messages up to 160 characters per segment. Longer messages are automatically split and reassembled.
  • MMS — Photos, videos, GIFs, audio clips, and contacts up to 5 MB.
  • Group messages — Group texts with up to 20 participants.
  • Monthly allowance — The Basic (free) plan includes approximately 250 SMS/MMS messages per month. Pro and Business plans offer higher messaging limits.

To send a message, open the Messages tab, tap New Message, select the number you want to send from using the From field, and compose your message.

For a complete walkthrough, see the Sending Messages guide.

Voice Calling

Phound numbers support full inbound and outbound voice calling over your device's data connection or Wi-Fi. Calls use VoIP, so they work anywhere you have an internet connection.

To make a call, open the Phone tab, confirm the Calling From indicator shows the correct number, dial or select a contact, and tap Call.

When someone calls one of your Phound numbers, the incoming call screen identifies which number is being called and which persona is assigned to that line.

Tip: If you experience choppy audio or dropped calls, check your internet connection. Phound calls require at least 100 Kbps of stable upload and download speed for clear audio.

Voicemail

Each Phound number can have its own independent voicemail box with a custom greeting — professional for work, casual for personal.

Setting Up Voicemail

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to configure.
  2. Scroll to Voicemail Settings.
  3. Toggle Voicemail on.
  4. Choose your greeting type:
    • Default greeting — Phound plays a standard automated message.
    • Custom greeting — Record your own or upload an audio file.
    • Text-to-speech greeting — Type your greeting and Phound converts it to a natural-sounding voice.
  5. Set the ring duration before calls go to voicemail (5 to 30 seconds).
  6. Tap Save.

Voicemail Notifications

When you receive a voicemail, Phound sends a push notification and displays it in the Messages tab. Each voicemail includes audio playback, caller information, and automatic transcription powered by Magnum AI — Phound's built-in AI assistant that converts voicemails to readable text so you can quickly scan messages without listening to the audio.

Tip: Magnum AI voicemail transcription is enabled by default for English messages. Turn it off in Settings > Voicemail > Transcription if you prefer audio-only.

Caller ID Customization

Phound lets you control how your number appears to the people you call by setting the name displayed on the recipient's phone.

How to Set Your Caller ID Name

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to configure.
  2. Scroll to Caller ID Settings.
  3. Enter the name you want recipients to see (for example, your business name).
  4. Tap Submit for Registration.

Warning: Caller ID name changes are not instant. The name is submitted to the national CNAM database and typically takes 24 to 72 hours to propagate across carriers. Some carriers may take longer.

You can also block your caller ID entirely for a specific number, so your calls display as "Private" or "Unknown." Toggle this in Caller ID Settings > Hide Caller ID.

Do Not Disturb (Per Number)

Phound's Do Not Disturb (DND) works on a per-number basis, so you can silence one number while keeping another fully active.

How to Enable Do Not Disturb

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to silence.
  2. Scroll to Do Not Disturb.
  3. Toggle DND on.
  4. Choose your mode:
    • Manual — DND stays on until you turn it off.
    • Scheduled — DND activates and deactivates at times you specify (for example, 6 PM to 8 AM on weekdays).

During DND, incoming calls go directly to voicemail, texts arrive silently, and you can still see missed activity when you open the app. Outgoing calls and texts are not affected.

Tip: Combine DND with the Business Hours feature for a fully automated after-hours experience.

Call Forwarding

Call forwarding routes incoming calls from a Phound number to another phone number — useful when you want calls on a different device or need someone else to handle a line.

How to Set Up Call Forwarding

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to forward.
  2. Scroll to Call Forwarding.
  3. Toggle Forward Calls on.
  4. Enter the destination phone number.
  5. Choose your forwarding mode:
    • Always forward — Every call is immediately routed to the destination.
    • Forward when unanswered — Calls ring on Phound first, then forward if you do not answer.
    • Forward when busy — Calls forward only when you are on another call.
  6. Tap Save.

Warning: Forwarded calls may incur additional per-minute charges depending on your plan. Check your subscription details for forwarding rates.

Auto-Reply Messages

Auto-reply automatically sends a text response when you cannot answer a call or respond to a message, keeping each line responsive even when you are unavailable.

How to Set Up Auto-Reply

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to configure.
  2. Scroll to Auto-Reply.
  3. Toggle Auto-Reply on.
  4. Choose when it activates:
    • When DND is active — Sends only when Do Not Disturb is on.
    • On missed calls — Sends a text to callers you do not answer.
    • Always — Replies to every incoming text (useful for out-of-office).
  5. Compose your auto-reply message.
  6. Tap Save.

Tip: Keep auto-reply messages short and professional. Include alternative contact information or expected response times when possible.

Business Hours

Business Hours lets you define when a specific number is "open." Outside those hours, calls route to voicemail, auto-reply activates, and DND enables — all automatically.

How to Set Business Hours

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to configure.
  2. Scroll to Business Hours.
  3. Toggle Business Hours on.
  4. Set your hours for each day of the week.
  5. Configure what happens outside hours:
    • Send calls to voicemail with a custom after-hours greeting
    • Activate auto-reply for texts received outside hours
    • Enable DND automatically
  6. Tap Save.

Number-Specific Ringtones and Notifications

Phound lets you assign different ringtones and notification sounds to each number, so you know which line is ringing without looking.

How to Set a Custom Ringtone

  1. Go to the Numbers tab and tap the number you want to customize.
  2. Scroll to Notifications and Sounds.
  3. Tap Ringtone to choose from the built-in library or upload your own.
  4. Tap Text Notification Sound to set a distinct sound for texts on this number.
  5. Optionally, configure a vibration pattern for the number.
  6. Tap Save.

Tip: Use distinctly different sounds for your most important numbers. After a few days, you will instinctively know which line is ringing by the sound alone.

You can also customize the notification badge color for each number under Notifications and Sounds > Badge Color, so lock screen notifications are color-coded by line.
