How to Add a New Phone Number
Adding a new phone number to your Phound account takes just a few minutes. Whether you need a separate line for work, a dedicated number for online shopping, or a private number for dating apps, Phound makes it easy to set one up and start using it right away.
This guide walks you through the entire process from start to finish, including choosing your area code, selecting a number, and assigning it to a persona.
Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following ready before adding a new number:
- An active Phound account (see Getting Started with Phound if you need to create one)
- A verified primary phone number on your account
- An active subscription plan that supports additional numbers (check your plan details under Settings > Subscription)
Tip: Not sure how many numbers your plan supports? Head to Settings > Subscription to view your current plan limits. You can always upgrade if you need more.
Step-by-Step: Adding a New Number
Step 1: Open the Numbers Tab
From the Phound home screen, tap the Numbers tab in the bottom navigation bar. This screen shows all your current phone numbers and provides the option to add more.
Step 2: Tap "Add Number"
Tap the + Add Number button located at the top-right corner of the Numbers screen. This opens the number selection flow.
Step 3: Choose Your Number Type
Phound offers several types of phone numbers:
-
Local Numbers — These come with a specific area code tied to a geographic region. Local numbers are great for creating a presence in a particular city or region, and they tend to feel more personal and familiar to the people you contact.
-
Toll-Free Numbers — These start with prefixes like 800, 888, 877, or 866. Toll-free numbers are ideal for businesses or professional use cases where you want callers to reach you without incurring charges on their end.
-
International Numbers — Phound offers international numbers for users who need a presence in other countries.
-
Vanity Numbers — Available through the Ring Boost feature, vanity numbers spell out memorable words or phrases on the phone keypad, making them easy for customers to remember.
Select the type that best fits your needs, then tap Continue.
Tip: Local numbers are the most popular choice for personal use. If you are setting up a number for a side business, freelancing, or customer support, consider a toll-free or vanity number for a more professional presence.
Step 4: Select Your Area Code or Prefix
After choosing your number type, you will see a search field where you can enter your preferred area code (for local numbers) or toll-free prefix (for toll-free numbers).
-
For local numbers: Type in the three-digit area code you want. For example, entering 415 will search for available numbers in the San Francisco area, while 212 will show numbers in New York City.
-
For toll-free numbers: Select your preferred prefix from the dropdown list (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, or 833).
Warning: Not all area codes have numbers available at all times. If your preferred area code shows no results, try a nearby area code or check back later as inventory refreshes regularly.
Step 5: Browse and Select Your Number
Phound displays a list of available numbers matching your chosen area code or prefix. Scroll through the list to find a number you like.
A few things to look for when choosing your number:
- Memorable patterns — Look for numbers with repeating digits or easy-to-remember sequences.
- Vanity options — Want a number that spells out a word on the phone keypad? Phound offers vanity numbers through the Ring Boost feature. Look for the Ring Boost option during number selection to browse available vanity numbers.
- Availability indicator — Each number shows a green checkmark if it is immediately available for activation.
Tap on the number you want to select it, then tap Continue.
Step 6: Review Pricing and Confirm
Before your number is activated, Phound shows you a summary screen with the following details:
| Detail | Description |
|---|---|
| Number | The phone number you selected |
| Type | Local or Toll-Free |
| Monthly Cost | $4.99/month for each additional number |
| Billing Cycle | When the charge will appear on your next invoice |
Review the details carefully. If everything looks good, tap Confirm and Add Number.
Tip: Every Phound plan includes one phone number at no extra cost. Additional numbers are $4.99/month each. Check your subscription details for your current plan.
Step 7: Assign to a Persona (Optional)
After your number is activated, Phound asks if you would like to assign it to a persona. Personas let you create distinct identities for different use cases — for example, a "Work" persona with your professional name and a "Personal" persona for friends and family.
- To assign a persona: Select an existing persona from the list or tap Create New Persona to set one up.
- To skip this step: Tap Skip for Now. You can always assign a persona later from the number's settings.
Assigning a persona to your number means that outgoing calls and texts from that number will display the persona's name and details in your Phound interface, helping you keep your different lines organized.
Step 8: Start Using Your New Number
That is it — your new number is live. You can immediately start making calls, sending texts, and receiving messages on your new Phound number. Head to the Calling and Messaging guide to learn more about using your number.
Understanding Number Costs
Phound keeps pricing straightforward:
- Included number: Every Phound plan — including the free Basic plan — comes with one phone number included at no extra cost.
- Additional numbers: Each additional number (local, toll-free, or international) costs $4.99/month, billed alongside your subscription.
- Vanity numbers: Available through the Ring Boost feature. Browse vanity options during the number selection process.
- No setup fees: There are no one-time activation fees for adding numbers.
Phound plans are Basic (Free), Pro ($9.99/month), and Business ($18/month). For full plan details, visit the Subscription and Billing section of the knowledge base or check Settings > Subscription within the app.
Number Availability and Inventory
Phound sources its phone numbers from licensed carriers across the United States and Canada. Because number availability depends on carrier inventory, a few things to keep in mind:
- Popular area codes (like 212, 310, or 415) may have limited availability. If you cannot find a number you like, check back in a day or two.
- Toll-free numbers in the 800 prefix are the most limited. Prefixes like 833 or 844 tend to have more availability.
- Released numbers may take up to 90 days to reappear in available inventory due to carrier policies, so if you release a number, you may not be able to get it back immediately.
Warning: Once you release a number, there is no guarantee it will be available again. If you think you might need a number in the future, consider keeping it on your account rather than releasing it.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
